Dancenorth brings Nightcafe to Parramtta, then heads homeward*

Duck flying furniture, swig from the bottle of red and shuttle between conversations, Dancenorth’s Nightcafe is open and ready for business at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta, from Monday 26 October until Wednesday 28 October for three performances only.

The show will then head north to Lismore and Queensland, Dancenorth’s home state.

Unleashed by the raw passion and exhilaration of Gypsy music, the dancers uncover a film noir tinted evening of alcohol-fuelled chaos during Nightcafe.

Nightcafe provides a night of dance, live music and conviviality under the direction of choreographer Gavin Webber and tour director Michelle Ryan. The production is also accompanied by a five-piece band, Waiting for Guiness.

Nightcafe proves both a poignant and humorous performance danced to rhythms and tempo which move from melancholy to frenetic.

Dancenorth, Australia’s fastest growing dance company, won Australia’s Best Dance Ensemble at the 2008 Green Room Awards and was nominated for five Helpmann Awards.

Highly regarded, the company is under the Artistic Directorship of Raewyn Hill and experiments with all art forms to create immersive and dynamic dance experiences for audiences regionally, nationally and internationally. Dancenorth is located in Townsville and balances a strong regional presence with a commitment to making art that tours the globe.

Nightcafe’s Director/ Choreographer, Gavin Webber, has been working professionally in dance theatre for over 10 years. After completing his degree at the Centre for the Performing Arts in Adelaide, Australia, he worked with Meryl Tankard Australian Dance Theatre from 1993 to 1998. With this company he toured Australia, North America, Scandinavia, Europe and Israel.

From 2005 to 2009, Gavin Webber was the Artistic Director of Dancenorth and created Nightcafe as well as Gravity Feed, Underground and Remember Me. In November 2009 he will be producing and creating a new work, Rock Show, with the band Regurgitator.

Michelle Ryan worked with Meryl Tankard from 1992 until 2001 as a dancer and Tankard’s assistant in Australia and overseas. In 2005, on returning to Australia, Ryan joined Dancenorth as the company’s Rehearsal Director throughout which time she has been instrumental in the creation and rehearsal management of all company productions and tours.

This year she has branched out into choreographing her own works for Dancenorth, collaborating with renowned didgeridoo player William Barton, fashion designer Katelyn Aslett, and also created the company’s first short dance film.
