Blair Cutting as DJ in New Theatre's Sydney premiere of Don Juan in Soho.

POSTED: 23 AUGUST 2009

New Theatre brings Patrick Marber's Don Juan to Sydney*

The Sydney premiere of Patrick Marber’s Don Juan in Soho will open in New Theatre, Newtown, this week.

It’s a modern-day morality tale for a world obsessed with celebrity, sex, wealth and seduction in the pursuit of happiness. An exuberant romp, this play is the latest work from the acclaimed British writer whose earlier works include Dealer’s Choice, Closer, and Notes on a Scandal. It’s crude, unsettling, and very, very funny!

“Moliere, Mozart, Marber ... every age has reinvented Don Juan at some point,” says director Luke Rogers.

“He’s the type of character you love to hate. He lives by his own moral code and within that framework, he’s brutally honest. Granted, he lies in order to seduce, but that’s all just part of the game, the hunt. Once the hunter has caught his prey, the mask comes off, and the hypocrisy is abandoned.

“He’s cruel, dangerous ... but in a strange way, you still can’t help admiring him because he’s totally upfront about who he is and what he wants.”

Marber’s adaptation takes Moliere’s version of Don Juan and transports it to modern-day Soho, London: the perfect playground for the most infamous sex-addict in history!

‘DJ’ has the names of 5000 women in his Blackberry; rich, suave and amoral, he’s “Satan in a suit from Savile Row”.

With a penchant for the perverse and an insatiable appetite for all things carnal, this charming, black-hearted seducer relentlessly chases skirt (and occasionally trouser) without prejudice towards race, religion or class. DJ is ready to die for sex — and he will!

Director: Luke Rogers; Set Design: Tom Bannerman; Lighting & Vision Design: Martin Kinnane; Costume Design: Cassandra Pascoli; Sound Design: Michael Huxley; Production Manager: Peter Gahan.

Cast: Fayssal Bazzi, Michael Briggs, Donna Brooks, Blair Cutting, Peter Buck Dettmann, Evin Donohoe, Matt Hyde, John Keightley, Hannah Levien, Katherine Warner.

Don Juan in Soho will run at New Theatre from 27 August to 28 September.
