God of Carnage ... a brutally funny satire with adults acting like children*

Gale Edwards returns to Sydney Theatre Company to direct a stellar cast in the comedy of bad manners, God of Carnage, by Yasmina Reza. The brutally funny satire from the author of Art and Life x 3 will play at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House, from 3 October to 14 November, with official opening night on Thursday 8 October.

Reza’s explosive satire has proved to be a must-see comedy throughout the world, with sold-out seasons in the West End and on Broadway and a swag of awards including the Tony for Best Play (as well as for Best Direction and Best performance by a Leading Actress) and the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

Four terribly civilised parents meet to resolve a playground fracas involving their children. Michel (Russell Dykstra) and Veronique (Sacha Horler) are genial hosts. Alain (Marcus Graham) and Annette (Helen Thomson) are gracious guests. Things start nicely enough but as the façade of gentility slips away, accusations and recriminations hurtle like missiles between them and the evening soon escalates into all-out war.

Russell Dykstra recently appeared in Sydney Theatre Company’s The Wonderful World of Dissocia. Marcus Graham last worked with the company in 2002’s The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams. Sacha Horler appeared in the first production of the Main Stage season this year, The Removalists, by David Williamson. Helen Thomson’s work for the company has included The Art of War, The Season at Sarsaparilla and The Virgin Mim.

Gale Edwards numerous productions for Sydney Theatre Company have included Woman in Mind, Festen, The Way of the World and The White Devil.
