Glen Street Theatre announces 2009 season
Glen Street Theatre, in the northern Sydney suburb of Belrose, has announced its 2009 subscription season: § True Stories Bangarra Dance Theatre True Stories shows us why Bangarra Dance Theatre is one of the most exciting contemporary dance companies in Australia and one of our country’s leading exports. There are two parts to the performance. 1. Emeret Lu (“Very Old Things”) The passion and energy of the traditional people of the Torres Straits fuel this exhilarating work by choreographer, Elma Kris. She explores her people’s love of the land, the sea and of each other. The power and excitement of dances celebrating rain, wind, the hunt, desire and pleasure mingle with the charm of the spiritual to create an uplifting work of lasting imagery. 2. X300 In the 1950s a series of atomic explosions were conducted on Maralinga Tjarutja traditional lands. The code name of the test site was X300. Frances Rings’ work powerfully explores a landscape assumed vacant and cleared of occupation but which in reality became a contaminated desert which poisoned the people. Rings’ work is known for its theatricality and inventiveness. 48 Feb. § Menopause the Musical, by Jeanie Linders Inspired by a hot flush and a bottle of wine, Jeanie Linders created Menopause the Musical as a celebration of women who are on the brink of, or have survived “the Change”. The show has evolved as a grass roots movement of women who are dealing with the challenges of life after 40, mentally, physically and spiritually. 17 Feb1 Mar. § Travelling North, by David Williamson Frank (Terence Donovan, Neighbours) and Frances (Sandy Gore, Brides of Christ) find new life in a twilight love affair, to the consternation of their conventional children. Their dream takes them both north to the sun, but no sooner do they find their idyll than signs of mortality betray Frank’s lion spirit. 1728 Mar. § Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, adapted by Patrick Barlow This blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of handsome hero, Richard Hannay, complete with stiff upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache, as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women. Four actors play 139 roles in 100 minutes. 112 Apr. § 60 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes Circa Ensemble Wherever Circa has taken its breathtaking, heart stopping show, audiences have flocked to see the impossible happen. Watch as intrepid acrobats battle the clock. Marvel at the astounding ways they bend, fly, juggle and balance. Be dazzled by their skills. Circa is Australia’s most innovative circus and 61 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes is its all time favourite family show. Fast, furious fun for everyone. Set to upbeat music and featuring four multi-skilled performers, this is circus without the boring bits. 1930 May. § Walking by Apple Tree Creek, by Ian Brown Join Del and Stan, two Aussie battlers, in their Winnebago, as their ultimate Australian adventure draws to an unexpected end. On the road they’ve faced the Big Pumpkin in Beaudesert, the Big Prawn in Ballina, the Big Chicken in Moonbi, the Big Snake in Ayr, the Big Beer Bottle and Big Shell in Tewantin, the Big Pineapples in Gympie and Nambour. Not to mention the Big Bull in Rockhampton and the Big Avocado at Tropical Fruit World in Tweed Heads. Now they must face the big things in their own lives. Del loves to talk about everything but she’s getting frustrated with Stan’s silence. 113 Jun. § Dealer's Choice, by Patrick Marber Set in a restaurant after closing time, it’s usually the same old guys and their weekly ‘friendly’ poker game, but on this particular night there is a ring-in. There is one last diner guest lurking in the restaurant who volunteers to join the game. Unknown to the amateur poker players, he is a mean, uncompromising professional gambler, owed a large sum of money by the restaurant owner’s compulsive son. 1425 Jul. § Elling, based on a novel by Ingvar Ambjornsen After two years of sharing a room in a mental institution Elling and Kjell are allowed out, back into society. It’s not that they’re dangerous, they’re just a little… hopeless. Elling is too smart. Too sensitive. Too … Elling. And Kjell? Well, Kjell has a plan, a dream, a great ambition. He wants to lose his virginity. Preferably today. Elling charts the bumps and stumbles as this truly odd couple make their way back into the world we take for granted. Over the course of the play they will build friendships, become accustomed to all things ordinary and start to experience the pleasure of the everyday. 1122 Aug. § Embers, by Campion Decent Overnight on 7 and 8 January, in the year 2003, a dry storm ignited over 80 fires in Victoria’s North East and Gippsland. From exhaustive interviews with residents of the region, Campion Decent has fashioned an extraordinary account of the fires; the heart-stopping tales of survival, the awe-inspiring courage and endurance of communities put to the test, the spine-chilling evocations of the wave of heat that roars through pristine valleysand the mountains of sandwiches volunteers anxiously prepared. 112 Sep. § Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling The quintessential story of friendship, Steel Magnolias serves up a slice of life in Louisiana that’s as warm and comforting as sweet potato pie. In the haven of Truvy’s beauty salon, six very different women come together to share their secrets and bare their souls, throwing in a little neighbourly gossip for good measure. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they weather every event in their lives with grace, determination and perfectly coiffed hair. When tragedy strikes, it is the familiar comfort of Truvy’s salon where they seek the solace and support that carries them through. 112 Sep.
