Not written by Mr Bach*
Martin Jarvis dedicates the results of his investigative inquiry into the origins of Bach’s cello suites “to all musicians who seek only the truth”.
Setting the moral tone of this compelling text, Jarvis goes on to present a convincing case against Johannes Sebastian Bach, accusing the classical music legend of falsely attaching his name to pieces he did not compose.
Instead, his second wife, Anna Magdalena Bach, is implicated as the Bach cello suites’ true composer.
When this story was first broken on ABC Radio’s AM program, it sent shockwaves through musical circles across the globe. Now, in Written by Mrs Bach, Jarvis takes us step-by-step through his thought processes in drawing this conclusion: an intriguing journey of speculation and discovery to uncover the truth and rewrite some musical wrongs.
Martin WB Jarvis is Associate Professor of Music at Charles Darwin University and Artistic Director of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra.
Welsh by birth, he has received a number of awards recognising his contribution to the cultural life of Australia, and in particular the Northern Territory.
In 2007 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to music. He is the Emeritus Director of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and served as chairman of the Centre for Social Research at the Northern Territory University. He is also a qualified chef.
