Worksongs ... Bell Australian Jazz Award winner. As well as her Factory Theatre gig in Marrickville on 2 October (see right), Tina Harrod will perform at the Macquarie Hotel, Wentworth Street, Sydney, on Friday 28 August. |
POSTED: 23 AUGUST 2009 Tina Harrod: easy transitions between jazz and soul* Tina Harrod is equally at home channeling the power and emotion of jazz greats such as Nina Simone and Billie Holiday as she is in more familiar soul terrain. And she does so with such impeccable intuition and raw feeling that it takes your breath away. Tina and her stellar band bring the same approach to their music from the excellent jazz spin on Stevie Wonder’s Big Brother to her beautiful rendition of Nick Drake’s Riverman or her sophisticated and revelatory take on Portishead’s Glory Box. Two of her own songs from her acclaimed debut album Shacked up in Paradise are also reinvigorated here as are a definitive collection of jazz classics such as Comes Love, Round Midnight and Feelin’ Good. Rave reviews have applauded the emotional power of Tina’s distinctive voice and her impeccable interpretation of artists as varied as Nina Simone or Nick Drake. Her knock-out live shows continue to swell the ranks of her loyal fanbase. The album Worksongs won this Sydney chanteuse the prestigious Bell Australian Jazz Award. Already much loved on the R&B and soul scene, it was with the release of this album last year that Tina Harrod cemented her reputation as one of Australia’s great singers. Sydneysiders will get a chance to hear music from Worksongs and from Tina’s next album when she appears, together with Jonathan Zwartz (bass), Matt McMahon (piano) and Hamish Stuart (drums), on Friday 2 October at the Factory Theatre, Marrickville, presented by places + spaces.
