POSTED: 08 MARCH 09 Café Carnivale at Glen Street* Sydney’s Glen Street Theatre will present the second in its new series of Musica Viva Café Carnivale world music concerts next Sunday (15 March) at 5.30pm. Stars of the event will be Banda Brasil, four Brazilian musicians presenting a rich mix of Brazilian rhythms, from heavy “batucada” groove to soft samba, bossa nova, baiao, maracatu and afoxe. Flute, light percussion and melodic voices create a natural and spontaneous sound encouraging audience participation, singing and dancing. The concert will also feature local Harbord resident Ednaldo Ignacio. The theatre, in the northern Sydney suburb of Belrose, will present three further Café Carnivale concerts on the third Sunday of ensuing months: Sunday 19 April Dereb Desalegn and The Lion of Judah Dereb Desalegn’s first solo CD included the song Wollo which topped the charts in Addis Ababa in 2003. The Lion of Judah features Rory Brown on bass, Sean McKenzie on keyboards, Peter Farrar on sax, guitar legend Jon Pease and the exciting young drummer Lisa Purmodh. Sunday 17 May Klezmer Connexion A fiery and passionate presentation of traditional Yiddish and Gypsy folk music. Hailing from Poland, Holland, Ukraine, and Switzerland, the musicians of the Klezmer Connexion connect through wild, heartfelt and joyous Jewish jazz in a celebration of all it means to be alive. Sunday 21 June Vento Del Sud and Zumpa A fun and energetic interpretation of the “old music” of Italy’s south. From villanelles to tarantellas and quadriglias to tammurriate this lively selection of music is bound to have you leaping out of your seat and hitting the dance floor! A feast of the finest folk music Italy has to offer.
