Nerida (left) and Melia Naughton ... heading west for the adventure of a lifetime.

Scarlett Affection

Scarlett Affection is the stylish sparkling folk act featuring sisters Melia & Nerida Naughton. Their colourful, sassy stage show combines haunting harmonies with charismatic theatrics, cheeky humour and moving songs.

With songwriting awards under their jewelled belts and gig credits from Byron to Memphis, Hobart to Toronto and Sydney to New York City, Scarlett Affection now heads out west for the adventure of a lifetime …

Assisted by a Trax grant from the Australia Council’s Contemporary Music Touring Program, and armed with their debut album Our Sweet Ambush, Melia and Nerida are going real, raw and regional!

Over four weeks, the girls will visit Dundurrabin, Mullumbimby, Gloucester, Dubbo, Albury, Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Nyngan, Bourke, Coonamble and Lightning Ridge before telling all in an inner Sydney cabaret performance at Bar Me in Kings Cross!

The shows will take place in – among other locations - an old theatre, a converted cinema, a gallery, a foyer, an arts council forecourt, a library, a church hall… and doubtless a few informal performances in local pubs!  The aim is reach new audiences, in new regions of NSW, meeting new people and having a carload of new experiences to return home with and weave into new songs.

Scarlett Affection:

Melia: redhead, 30, gregarious, cheeky, embarrassing, ridiculous

Nerida: blonde, 26, considered, commanding, controlled, caring, lovely

With these two sisters, in a car, 24/7 for four weeks, singing in country towns out west — there’s bound to be mischief!

Scarlett Affection was officially conceived in 2004 when Melia threw herself on Nerida’s doorstep and never moved out. Nerida had been studying composition and production as part of her Bachelor of Contemporary Music at Southern Cross University, Lismore; Melia had been working as a theatre actor in Melbourne after graduating from the VCA School of Drama. They had always  sung together, as youngsters in Sydney and then as moody adolescents growing up south of Hobart in Tasmania.

But in 2004, the angle of the moon and the planets aligned and they acknowledged this blossoming new project called Scarlett Affection. It took a long while to decide on a name. Because there are two sisters, it only seemed democratic to have two names. The colour red and all its hues had been a pivotal part of life for both sisters: the passion, the fury, the anger, the sex, the appeal, the stockings, the cabaret, the charisma, the history; and the tenderness and simpatico felt by the sisters and their renewed connection could only be called affection. Scarlett Affection so became the name for this musical journey with the primary goal being to affect as many people as possible.
