Angullong 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

I’ve long regarded Orange and the Adelaide Hills as Australia’s premier regions for sauvignon blanc, their success with the variety no doubt due to altitude-induced cool climate. At their best, they both produce sauvignons that have plenty of varietal character  but generally more palate depth and weight than those from New Zealand’s Marlborough district.

Over the past few years, Angullong, which has vineyards above 600 metres on the southern slopes of Mount Canobolas, has cemented itself a firm reputation as one of the leading sauvignon producers in the Orange district.

The 2010 vintage, which was awarded the top gold medal at the recent Winewise Small Vigneron Awards, is an excellent example of what I’m talking about. Aromas of tropical fruit and citrus burst from the glass and continue seamlessly on to the palate. The wine has excellent length and the finish is squeaky clean.

I remember enjoying a couple of years ago a delicious dish of chicken breast stuffed with avocado and lime. I think this wine would have matched it near perfectly.

Good value at $17. Grab a case and stick it in a cool spot for drinking over the coming summer.
