Food rescue charity OzHarvest pops the cork on new fundraising wine*

OzHarvest, Australia's favourite food rescue charity, has launched a signature wine label, Harvest, to help raise additional funds to feed the hungry across the country.

Proceeds from each bottle of Harvest Semillion Sauvignon Blanc 2011 and Cabernet Merlot 2010 sold will allow OzHarvest to provide a meal to a family four. That means 48 people will be fed for each dozen bottles sold of Harvest.

The new vintage wines, each with a distinctive yellow cap, the trademark colour of OzHarvest, were made by winemakers Justin McNamee and Justin McCarthy from 1882, a South Australian company who source and make wines from the best regions in the state.

OzHarvest founder, Ronni Kahn, always on the look-out for new and innovative ways to fundraise, knew that wine was definitely on the menu when she first met the "Justins".

"There's nothing better than enjoying a beautiful glass of wine and it's even more satisfying knowing that by purchasing Harvest wine instead of your usual drop, you've provided a meal for a family of four."

Ronni said the Harvest range of wines was the first step towards an ever-growing list of opportunities for OzHarvest to continue its good work.

"There's such huge potential with this wine. Not only can it be used as a house wine in restaurants and by caterers but our corporate supporters are using it as gifts or for functions."

Since it began in 2004, OzHarvest has collected more than 10 million surplus meals from caterers and restaurants around the country delivering it straight to charities that feed people in need. Not only does OzHarvest help feed the hungry, it also prevents unwanted food ending up as landfill.

Harvest wines can be ordered online via www.ozharvest.org and are available for $190 per dozen including delivery throughout Australia.

2011 Harvest Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

This lively and fresh sauvignon blanc, sourced exclusively from Mt Benson, has lots of passionfruit and citrus on the palate making it a great all-round summer drop. Try it with spicy Asian flavours, too.

2010 Harvest Cabernet Merlot

This drink-now red is an elegant blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot from the Adelaide Hills. It has lots of cherry and forest fruit aromatics and displays hints of mint and blackberry. Great with your Christmas turkey or at a mate's barbecue.

About OzHarvest:

OzHarvest is the nation's leading food rescue operation that has been feeding Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle's hungry since 2004. OzHarvest has recently spread their services even further, launching in Adelaide and Brisbane in 2011 reaching even more of Australia's most disadvantaged.

Since 2004, OzHarvest has delivered over 10 million meals and has rescued over 2400 tonnes of food from ending up as landfill. Using a fleet of 14 vehicles, OzHarvest rescues food from restaurants, cafes, hotels, retailers and food outlets throughout these cities as well as helping in rural areas with their regional food rescue program REAP. OzHarvest has plans to expand the food-rescue service to other capital cities.

OzHarvest was founded in November 2004 by Ronni Kahn, an event's organiser who was so stunned at the amount of food wasted she did something about it. Ronni Kahn was recognised as Australia's Local Hero 2010 as part of the Australian of the Year awards.

Thanks to OzHarvest, many men, women and children now have a wider supply and variety of fresh and cooked food, fruit and vegetables that they could not access previously.
