South Australia’s Langhorne Creek celebrates new branding and Jimmy Watson links*

The home of the oldest officially recorded Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world, Langhorne Creek, has launched a new regional branding initiative which celebrates its unique past and exciting future.

“Experience our Past. Taste the Future” highlights the region’s heritage while focussing on the vitality and passion of the people who live and work in the region, one of Australia’s largest, premium red grape growing districts.

The release of this new regional branding message coincides with celebrations in the region of the 50th anniversary of the Jimmy Watson Trophy: Langhorne Creek produced the first ever winner of the trophy and has won an impressive four Jimmy Watsons in total.

In 1962, the inaugural winner was the 1961 Stonyfell “Claret type” – a Cabernet Shiraz blend from the Metala vineyards in Langhorne Creek. To commemorate this prestigious win, 12 Langhorne Creek wineries are banding together to promote the merits of the region, renowned in the wine world for its quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Wineries include Angas Plains, Bleasdale, Bremerton, Brothers in Arms, Cleggett Wines, John’s Blend, Heartland, Killibinbin, Kimbolton, Lake Breeze, Step Rd and Zonte’s Footstep.

“Langhorne Creek has an amazing past: our wine heritage dates back to the 1850s and we have families who have been making wines for five generations or more – including Australia.s second oldest family winery,” Langhorne Creek’s Grape & Wine Executive Officer Lian Jaensch says.

“But it’s the fact that we’re building on our past and focussing on the future that really sets us apart. In the past 10 years alone, locally branded wine producers have grown from four to 15 and our winemakers and grape growers are not afraid to push the envelope, resulting in exciting yet approachable wines that provide the perfect accompaniment to food.

“Not only are most of our wineries family-owned, but we’re one big family and that sense of community and relaxed attitude comes through in every bottle of wine we create.”

Surrounded by ancient red gums and with cooling lake and ocean breezes, Langhorne Creek is less than an hour south east from Adelaide in South Australia. With seven cellar doors and boutique B&Bs, it’s the perfect destination for day trips or longer stays.
