New Swinging Bridge whites in their new Cellar Door
With their new cellar door in the main street of Canowindra receiving an exciting new fit out, Swinging Bridge Wines has released their 2011 Swinging Bridge Pinot Gris and 2011 Swinging Bridge Sauvignon Blanc ($18.95).
2011 has been a busy year for the Ward family of Swinging Bridge. Vintage was difficult, requiring more than the average amount of time in vineyard, work started on the new cellar door and the Swinging Bridge Reserve wines were blended and bottled.
During this time, Tom Ward, who has recently been appointed Vice President of NSW Wine, managed to coax the weather-challenged vines into producing quality cool climate grapes for both the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
“I’m sure it has been said before, but 2011 was a particularly challenging year in Orange,” conceded Swinging Bridge owner Tom Ward. “We spent a great deal of time ensuring that the vines were in the best possible condition. Lower yields were called for, as was judicious canopy management, allowing good sunlight and air flow through the vines.”
“We managed to escape disease and achieve good aromatics in both wines, with a lovely natural acidity that the high elevation of the Orange region produces so well.”
A small component of each of the wines was matured in large format, older oak in order to build texture in the finished wines, whilst not losing the attractive aromatics.
The new wines will be on display at the new Swinging Bridge cellar door, which is located in Canowindra, in what was originally Tom Ward’s Great Great Grandfather, Thomas J.Finn’s general store. The restored Victorian stores were built in 1887 and feature the existing benches and original invoice books from the early 1900s.
“It’s an exciting time for us,” said Tom, “The old stores have such a rich history in our region. In its day, the stores were a labyrinth of home wares, manchester and everything you could possibly think of. Wine is the next chapter.”
The new Swinging Bridge cellar door will be opening at the beginning of October in preparation for Orange Wine Week, beginning October 21st.
Distribution and pricing: The Swinging Bridge Wines are available throughout NSW, SA and Victoria as well as online from www.swingingbridge.com.au
