Kingston Estate’s signature wine released
Nobody can doubt South Australian Winemaker, Bill Moularadellis for his commitment to the Australian wine industry. Since 1985 Bill has forged a leading family business based on passion, innovation and ongoing improvement.
It is these characteristics that are the backbone to the recently released flagship Kingston Echelon wines; the 2008 Kingston Echelon Petit Verdot ($27.99) and 2008 Kingston Echelon Shiraz ($27.99).
The Echelon wines aim to personify the commitment and drive that encapsulates Kingston. “Consistent evolution, experimentation and perfection is engrained in our culture,” explained Bill. “This is the foundation of our Echelon wines.”
Petit Verdot is Kingston Estate’s and the Riverland’s signature variety. Petit Verdot is one of Bordeaux’s classic varieties, with long established plantings in Médoc. It is a variety that yields concentrated, age-worthy wines and tends to be more suited to warmer climates where it is able to fully ripen and show its true potential.
Kingston’s vineyard was planted in 1998 and is the largest single planting of this variety in the southern hemisphere.
“The 2008 Echelon Petit Verdot is a combination of the best parcels from our vineyard. The grapes were handled with extreme care, with mainly free run juice used, and some light pressings to add further body and texture. Maturation was in a combination of French and American barrels in order to build additional complexity, without dominating the vibrant fruit flavours,” said owner and winemaker Bill.
“Whilst the Echelon Shiraz captures the best characters from a trio of South Australian regions, the Echelon Petit Verdot is a reflection of the terroir of the Riverland, something that is not usually celebrated in Australia.”
The 2008 Echelon Shiraz highlights the extraordinary varietal characteristics of Shiraz achieved through Kingston’s ability to blend across regions. The Echelon Shiraz is blended from three key South Australian regions including Adelaide Plains, Clare Valley and Mount Benson with a philosophy of showcasing Kington Estate’s best parcels of South Australian Shiraz.
“The concentrated, varietal flavours of the old vines from Adelaide Plains and the elegance from Clare Valley combine with the spiciness and natural acidity from the Mount Benson fruit work magnificently,” explained Bill.
“We believe that this is a true expression of South Australian Shiraz. We have a clear vision with our wines, from these flagships through the rest of the ranges. We are forging new relationships with grapes growers, retailers and consumers, and having great success. We believe that this is the future of the Australian wine industry, through commitment, ongoing development and innovation.”
