Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall wins Man Booker Prize*

Fourth Estate author Hilary Mantel has been named winner of the Man Booker Prize for 2009 at a ceremony in London.

A tale of political intrigue, passion and courage, her winning work, Wolf Hall, charts the upheaval caused by Henry VIII’s desire to marry Anne Boleyn, as seen through the eyes of royal adviser Thomas Cromwell.

Judges said Wolf Hall contained “a vast narrative sweep that gleams on every page with luminous and mesmerising detail”.

Judge James Naughtie added: “It probes the mysteries of power by examining and describing the meticulous dealings in Henry VIII's court, revealing in thrilling prose how politics and history is made by men and women.”

Hilary Mantel is the author of 11 books, including A Place of Greater Safety, Giving Up the Ghost and most recently the critically acclaimed Beyond Black.

She was shortlisted for a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the 2006 Orange Prize for fiction. READ REVIEW
