Karen Mills, Texere — To Weave — The predominant imagery in Karen Mills’ painting is influenced by indigenous weaving, memories of hand-knitted woollen garments made by her adoptive mother and Western abstract art. The loop stitch technique commonly used by Aboriginal women to make bags from bush string is a central motif in the work as a metaphor for identity and connection/disconnection, reflecting upon her background as an Indigenous woman who has experienced and learned from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultures. 4 May–5 Jun.
