TAP Gallery hosts inaugural indigenous art exhibition and prize*

Sydney’s TAP Gallery will host the inaugural Walkabout Annual Art Prize and Exhibition in conjunction with NAIDOC Week 2010. The exhibition will run from Monday 5 July to Sunday 11 July 2010, with a variety of events held throughout the week.

The winner will be announced at the exhibition launch on Wednesday 7 July at 6pm, and there will be a People’s Choice presentation on Sunday 11 July at 3pm.

On the evening of the launch, a smoking ceremony will take place, followed by guest speakers. Special guest Djon Mundine, curator of the Campbelltown Art Centre, will open the exhibition.

The exhibition will showcase local and rural indigenous artists and feature a large section of indigenous artwork, sculpture and prints from across the nation. This weeklong event will not only feature visual artists but also provide a venue for indigenous performing artists and craftspeople to showcase their talents and wares.

Documentaries, educational digital works and short films will be screened upstairs throughout the week, and an indoor craft market will be held on Sunday 11 July from 11am to 5pm, featuring live music & bush tucker

The event has the support of The Department of Aboriginal Affairs and is free to all.
