POSTED: 12 JULY 2009 Locust Jones snares Hazelhurst Art Prize* Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre, in southern Sydney, is delighted to present Hazelhurst Art Award Art on Paper, an exhibition of selected and winning entries from an arts competition promoting excellence and innovation in the field of art on paper. Hazelhurst invited all artists local, state, national and international to submit works for the 2009 Hazelhurst Art Award and received close to 800 quality entries. The winner of the Hazelhurst Art Award 2009 is Locust Jones. The judge, Professor Anita Taylor, Director of the National Art School, declared Sydney artist Locust Jones the winner of the $20,000 award. Locust’s winning entry, titled Ride It ’Til It Dies, is a 10-metre visual narrative in ink, commenting on the human race and the global state of affairs. The Hazelhurst Art Award 2009 also featured the Friends of Hazelhurst Local Artist Prize of $5000, which was won by Paul Williams, with his work titled Variation on the theme of Boxing and other Matters. The work features a variety of materials, including gouache, oilstick, charcoal, texta, enamel and pencil on a variety of papers. A total of 82 artists are featured in the exhibition, including George Gittoes, Nicholas Harding, Lindy Lee, Fiona McDonald, Adam Norton, Catherine O’Donnell, Joan Ross and Peter Sharp. Nationally, artists selected come from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. A diverse range of paper media features in the exhibition, including pencil drawings, charcoal, ink, oil, acrylic, gouache and watercolour, photography, printmaking and paper animation.
