John Philippides ... will give an artist talk and host creative drawing workshops for kids and adults.

Winner of the 2008 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Prize to visit Grafton*

Artist John Philippides will be in Grafton on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 of November to see his winning drawing, entitled Portrait 2, hanging in the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA) at Grafton Regional Gallery. While there John will give an artist talk and host creative drawing workshops for kids and adults.

At 10.30am on Saturday 29 November John will talk about the amazing drawing which judge for the 2008 JADA, Hendrick Kolenberg, described as truly capturing the essence of the subject in all her uniqueness. In this case, the subject is John’s mother, whom John has drawn many times. Insight into this very affecting work and John’s artistic practice will be revealed at the talk. Following John’s artist talk the regular 11am Saturday JADA public tour will be conducted by the gallery’s volunteer guides.

On Saturday afternoon between 1pm and 4pm the kids will get a chance create a multi panel enchanted forest drawing in this once off special workshop. The workshop is presented as a sequence of planned and directed “game-like” stages in which the children respond in individually. John will inspire art adventurers, aged 8-12yrs to work together to create the monumental drawing. All materials will be supplied and places are strictly limited at $15 per participant.

On Sunday between10am-2pm adults will get their chance to learn from this talented artist. This workshop is a visual journey that will intensify the understanding of the human form. The class will cater to all levels of experience and will feature a live model. Participants can bring their own mediums or those use provided. Price for the adult workshop is $40 or $35 for art club and FOGG members. This price includes materials and morning tea. The class will have a maximum of ten participants to ensure personal tuition.

John’s winning work is on display in the 2008 JADA with 47 other incredible drawings until Friday 5 December at the Gallery.

The Grafton Regional Gallery is located at 158 Fitzroy Street Grafton and is open 10am to 4pm from Tuesday to Sunday.
